well, as a result of my suggestion that the folks i've installed MT for consider donating to Ben and Mena for their hard work, and to get recently updated keys, a rather unexpected thing happened -- twice! first ratty donated enough for two keys, one for her, one for me (!), and then Dan sent in a donation (even though he's only used MT to make a site for one of my hostees, redesign announcement pending), which gave me another key. it's being used over at surreally main site right now, but i'm open to transferring this key (which causes your blog to ping MT's site when updated, so it shows up in their recently updated list) to a blog on these servers, so, you know, if you are a surreally hostee, let me know if you are in need of such a key but without the resources to donate yourself.
(i'm not awake, my sentence structure isn't the best here. had to get this posted though).

and Suzie is now pingable!
note to all other surreally hostees: if you are interested in the pingy goodness of the new MT, please let me know, upgrading you is easy, takes a few minutes.
i'm here to help you get the most out of your MT. it's like, my mission in life, well, one of them...
I sense a trend here. The doubting Susans are the first to come forward.
trendsetters!
you know i tried to upgrade but permission was denied on some of the directories because [i think] you were the one who installed and upgraded me before. i'd love the pingy goodness of the new mt even though i don't really understand it yet. can you upgrade me again, or give me permissions so i can do it myself?
i shall give it a shot. if i can't, permissions wise, then i can fix a new login for your subdomain. servers are weird.
additional note: recently updated key has been bequeathed upon Lavonne, who is also now updated to MT 2.21.
the upgrades continue.
woohoo - thank you!!!! and my very first recent update showed up on the movabletype front page. boy, they move down the list fast, though. heh.

are you pingable yet? must go see. pinging is so fun!
well, i'm still not clear on the ping-thing. but i will follow directions and put the code on the site and see what happens. will let you know when it's pingable.
it always becomes a lot clearer after you play with it. at first it seems confusing, till you see it in action, and do some pinging, then all of a sudden the little ping light goes on. you'll see!
ok, that's working. now how do you do the google thing?
well, first you have to sign up for the Google API key. (just google for "google api key". then when you get the key put it in the preferences screen, and add the google tags.
you have so many entries -- it so slows down rebuilds -- i'm not sure i'd recommend it. in fact i've only ever been able to make it work here on this blog. surreally, it failed. *sigh*
but you can do 'related pages' on your front page probably. or -- check out the message boards for more tips and tricks re: that feature.
Just FYI, Kare has the google thing going on asiwassaying.com/blog.
the google thing is definitely very interesting. i had context errors putting it in other blogs, so i imagine i was putting something in the wrong place. worked perfectly here! go figure.
I'm with you, kd: pinging rocks!
Someone should donate for me. Unless they want to be paid in beanie babies or I have collected a few years worth of Jane magazine.
and you should also upgrade to the version with the pings. wait. that would be my job, right? ok, i should upgrade you.
Excuse me in advance for my self-admitted ignorance on the whole ping thing, but it does seem to be something of a washout, doesn't it?
I acknowldge that I have not the appreciation for the inner workings of things that you have, but this does seem like a classic case of "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean there is any real need for it."

Ping function?
umm, well, in this case, the pinging goes to a centralized place (the MT main site). much like pinging weblogs.com (another thing MT does), it causes the site to appear in a recently updated list. in these cases, pinging is a source of more traffic, and a way for people to find sites that have been recently updated as opposed to sites that still have the same old content up. very useful. and the weblogs.com pinging is also used by the ever-popular blogrolling so that people's linklists mark the recently updated sites.
and the entry-to-entry pinging is quite useful as well. no disappointment whatsoever on any pinging functions. they're more likely to be utilized by the more technically inclined, of course, but i can already think of a half dozen instances i've seen an entry and wished it was pingable. the ability to continue the discussion is wonderful.
pinging rocks.
forgive me, more ping type questions.
you were successful in getting me to donate, but now i can't figure out exactly how to update my site with the new mt. and, is updating purely for the abilty to ping? or are there other new advantages? i am hopeless on the tech side, and this ping thing has me befuddled.
