he's five

this morning, chris drives me to work so he and the kid can have the car for the day. on the way, we spot a very, very large lady. we're talking like four hundred pounds large. and from the back seat, kurt says, 'you don't wanna see that'. and chris says, 'no, no i don't'. kurt elaborates: 'too fat'. and i decide to seize the moment and remind the kid that we don't say these things when people can hear us, because it hurts their feelings, and that's mean. and we ask him how he'd feel if somebody said something mean about him, and he replied, 'i'm not fat'. so chris asks, well, what if they said you were short? and the kid says, 'i'm not short, i'm five'.

*sigh* five is such a literal age.

Well. He kind of ended that conversation, eh? There's just not much to say after that.

at that point, anything else becomes an exercise in futility, yes. he'd made his point.

we did try to explain like 'what if you had three ears, wouldn't you get your feelings hurt if people made fun of you?' but that was just silly.

kd - that is PRICELESS! You need to have a little "Kurt Says the Darndest Things" book to give to him when he's 25 or something. I love Kurt.

i seem to remember having a similar conversation with zakk, 13 years ago..., trying to get him to see the error of his way of calling people 'fat'. the next day, he went up to my mother and says "nani? is you fat or is you plump?"
oy...

*schpewwwwwwwwsssssss* beverage of the evening on monitor. I really like this kid. heh.

So thats what I have to look forward to... :-)

That is some pretty good logic for a 5 year old! Just wait until he hits his teens. Woohoo!

:)))))))

hee. Sometimes, I forget that I'm at work and I read things and just crack right the hell up. Then everyone comes running to see what's so funny and I have to mumble..."um...nothing.". hee. God, that was just too cute.

I kind of like the implicit logic he's using; "Of course I'm short. I'm five."

i wish i was a good enough writer to convey the tones in his voice during this conversation. it was just one of those hysterically cute conversations you have with a little kid. a very self-aware little kid, at that.

'No. You're short compared to most everyone else, kid. And until you get taller? You're short.'

Not that I've had a conversation almost exactly like this within the past few months, or anything. ;)

LOL. Think I'll start saying, "I'm not a hippie, I'm forty-nine.

This reminds me... I remember a few years ago, my little brother was listening to conversation being had at the dinner table, and someone mentioned having burned the "roof" of their mouth. My brother, who had been silent the entire time, bursts out with "You mean, there's a whole ROOF in my mouth?" and then proceeds to put his fingers in there to check and see.

It was So. Cute.
