i'd rather be red than ...

my son is obsessed with color. no, it's not what you think -- we're talking, primary colors here (for the most part, some secondary colors are involved).

his first favorite color was blue, because blue is a boy color. and he was fiercely adamant about having blue things to complement his boyness. if there were any things that had to be split up amongst members of the household, he was always very insistent about making sure him and his daddy were given blue things (think, m&ms for instance).

and then things changed. suddenly, blue was no longer his color. it's red now, and oddly enough, pink as a second favorite (because it is like red, you see). so, any gender-identity through color coding has fallen by the wayside of his obsession with red. he is, in fact, upset that another kid at daycare also has red as a favorite color. he would like Mando to get a different favorite color, even though, as i told him, there's plenty of red to go around. but no. he's very possessive about red.

oh god. something about typing this just got seventies-era sammy hagar singing 'red' in my head. red, red, i want red, there's no substitute for red...

i'm partial to blues and grays.

and I think everyone must be on vacation right now because I can't get a comment to save my life today, kd.

That's a pretty intense little guy! Imagine the day when he can conceptualise and tell you what red means/meant to him.

aha! i asked him straight out and he said, because i could put out fires with water! makes so much sense. Mando wants to put out fires with water too. so, they have a little competetive thing going on there, wanting to be the fireman with a big shiny red truck.

hey, sometimes all ya gotta do is ask.

I have an article on that at home. It's called "Little Boys Blue" or "Little Boy Blues". I'll find it for you when I get back.

Not on vacation, Jason....they've all been rounded up by TIPS. (I'm joking, I devoutly hope.)

Wouldn't it be nice if the most pressing concern was whether or not somebody else had the same favorite color? Kids have it made. I spent my whole childhood waiting to be a grownup. Now I spend my whole life wishing I was a child.

Blue then Red .. then blue .. then red.. then blue ..

Ohh wait .. I'm being pulled over ... be back in a minute ..

The internet surfing police .. I was generating too much traffic on my website .. how dare I...

He's got some great taste in color .. and it's good that he wants to "posses" a color as his own .. he's starting to define himself and his likes .. How much fun it would be to worry about keeping my crayon at the ready, and my show downs on the play ground end with a game of tag..

My favorite colors ( Blue, Burnt Orange, Purple)
There are soo many to pick just one .. ;-)

Tobey

my favorite color is actually beige. many different shades, really. i'm completely into the earth tones.

Red is my nephew's favorite color, mainly because (I think) it's Grandma's favorite color and she's warped his mind. ;) He is incredibly adamant about RED, RED, RED as well....for a long time he wouldn't get any Power Rangers unless they were the red one....so we had about ten red Power Rangers with various attachments in the house. Oh, the things they do sometimes...
