unhappiness is a wet cat

poor, poor kitty. it was so time for an anti-flea shampoo. it would seem that the relief from itching would make the bath at least a tolerable experience.

but no. no, it wasn’t any fun at all (if you look close, you can actually see the fleas on his face there) – we got them off to the best of our ability, we emptied that icky water out of the tub (yeeeech!) and gave him a good rinsing.

i know he must have felt better afterward, but where’s the gratitude? where is the love, man?

    Okay!
Goto the vet and get “Frontline”.
Put it between the kitty’s haunches.
(Last resort-but it will stay in the bloodstream and repel fleas that are left in the house. Well, it did for me-I mean my cats not me!)
You can comb the kittys hair with a baby comb. Place a flat dish with a very wet paper towel on the dish. When you see a flea in the comb, smash the flea with a spoon. They make a crackle sound when ya kill ‘em. Fleas absolutely hate water….

my preferred method of flea killing (the ones i’ve caught) is to drop them in a glass or dish of soapy water – the soap breaks the surface tension of the water, so they can’t float to the top and bounce off.

i like to watch them drown, after they’ve been chewing up my son and my kitty. little bastards.

OMG — Bill and everyone else, PLEASE do not spray your homes with Raid to get rid of fleas! There are natural methods that are much safer for your pets, you and your kids. I’m disabled today partly because of fogging for fleas. Don’t do it!

  6. kd

we’re doing the granules in the carpet – it’s a salt, that repels fleas. it’s not perfect, but it isn’t Raid, not by a long shot.

  7. lavonne

yes, i think that’s a good, nontoxic alternative. VERY important, especially when you have little kids.

    great kitty shots, btw.

  8. lavonne

i just remembered–the salt actually dries out the fleas’ little bodies and shrivels them up. my sister used to use it in her house because her son had severe asthma and couldn’t tolerate pesticides. good for you, kd!

  9. kd

yes, and we have a nice vacuum with a HEPA filter and no bag – so we’re good on not polluting the house.

last time he fleapowdered i was sick for days.

Yeah, KD, that wet Kitty shot was priceless. I’ve always had dogs, I’ve never even thought of people bathing cats before. What do you do to prevent the cat scratching and/or biting the hand that feeds him?

  11. Bill

Lavonne, I quarantined my cat and then washed the whole place thoroughly before letting him back in; I’m very sensitive to cat-poisoning properties of these things. And frankly, raid was all I could afford at the time.
Another tip: put a big pinch of nutritional yeast in your cat’s food. I’ve been told that it helps to keep fleas off of cats (amkes it smell unappetizing to fleas or somesuch) – whether this is factual I have no idea, though I’ve certainly had no flea problems since adding it to their diet – but it makes for a good kitty vitamin, keeps their fur super-shiny, and they LOVE it. I have to hide mine in a sealed container or they break into it, even if I hide it in a cupboard.

That is one pissed off kitty. Holy cow.

i’m guessing Raid *would* be cheaper – 2.5 pounds of the “FleaGone” crystals (which is just boric acid in a crystalline form so that it sinks into the carpet and stays there) is $22 bucks. but, it lasts a year and i is guaranteed.

Cats are generally ungrateful. I think it has to do with their attitude of complete superiority to all other beings! Great pics by the way. And you might try some Avon skin so soft on your son. It works. It has really helped my nieces who attract every biting bug within 50 yds.

    Aw. Poor kitty. lol

  16. JEfromCanada

Both kitty shots are precious. Definitely not a happy animal.

And we knew it wasn’t you holding the kitty in that first shot. That arm was just too hairy!

  17. kd

mine are almost as hairy. i’m a furry woodland critter, really. but i’m not tan like that.

and i bleach my arm hair.

  18. dan

Hey, the boric acid routine is great. …and prevents other undesirable bugs from getting a foothold in your household!

    Absolutely great pics!

  19. Linkmeister

Wow! That is one angry kitty-cat (pic 2)! Actually, I’m surprised you managed to get a picture of the cat in the tub…in my experience washing cats, I always needed three hands.

  20. kd

actually, chris handled the actual cat, although my allergies seem to have adjusted to kitty being around, i didn’t think getting splashed with cat-water could possibly be good for me.

i was rather annoying chris with my picture taking, but angry cats make such great subjects.

    Poor little puddy cat :)

  22. kd

i tried to pet kitty goodbye this morning. he’s still really mad. but, he’s very soft and fluffy!

  23. skits

The pissed-off kitty pic is adorable. ha!

  24. Pete

Hehe… that poor thing looks so unhappy. kd, for next time you may want to direct the cat washer to this: Cat Bathing as a Martial Art. :)

  25. Bill

Poor beast! And don’t forget to spray the whole apartment with raid, vacuum well and throw the vacuum cleaner bags out immediately. The live fleas on the cat are only 1/20th of the problem.

After I had to bathe mine twice in one month (for plain dirt), they adapted really well – they were being sweet and lovey before they’d even dried off! It helps that they were generally well trained, but that was still pretty impressive.

  26. kd

oh yes, we’re doing that flea-busters stuff that makes the carpet inhospitable for fleas for a year, and advantaging the cat, because he goes outside all the time. we will win the flea battle! this was just emergency measures to at least make the little guy feel better. he was so itchy.

    and Pete? that was hysterical.

  27. Tammie

Damn he was dirty, but I can’t help to feel sorry for him.*sniff*

  28. Munin

    *gaffaw* Poor kitty.
We used be able to bathe my old cat with no problems. She would sit there and let me rub her, pour water over her and lather her up. Our new kitten is entirely a different story. There is no ways that we would ever be able to get her into a bathtub without a full scale war and many casualties. Luckily we haven’t had a flea problem yet, and I am hoping that we never do.

  29. Anonymous

ROTFLMAO!!! Those pics are priceless, especially the first one. “if a picture paints a thousand words” and we all know what he’s saying, don’t we? ;) I can’t imagine trying to bath my cat – I’, pretty sure only one of us would survive the experience but I wouldn’t put any money on who!

I must again proclaim to the world the wonders of Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil.

Not the bug repellant. The bath oil.

It scares the life right out of mosquitoes, ants, fleas, and some small woodland creatures. But not cats or dogs. Got an ant hill? Skin So Soft. Mosquito bait? Skin So Soft. Fleas? Again, Skin So Soft. It’s a Berkeley-dwelling pest -espising, girl’s wet dream (you have to sign a “no poisons, no preservatives, 100% recyclable” contract to live here, you know).

It must be made of crushed cockroaches or something, to scare everything else to DEATH while being non-toxic. The only thing is you have to be ok with smelling forest fresh.

Also Program is pretty good. Advantage is great, but it stings the kitty’s skin, and if you apply it as directed, in one spot on the back of the neck, they might lose a little fur. I can tell you not to bother with the orange oil based sprays – cats H A T E it almost as much as being dunked in water.
