Pete’s developed a remote trackback feature, it’s basically in the concept stage but you can see it working at trackback.blogspot.com. this means that folks using blogger can have a remotely hosted trackback popup, just like they have the remotely hosted comments!

I’m eventually going to get into the Ping Thing (as I love to say) as soon as I work my way past popup photo hooha. And yes, I think that there’s much fun and good to be had via trackback. Have you seen how long everyone’s link lists are getting? This way we can stay focused on a serious topic and what everyone’s saying – get various opinions, not just those on our list. Also there will be silly meme fun, which I’m the first to say I enjoy!
yes, linklists are looking rather long, and this does promote focus. and you know how creative bloggers are, there will be all manner of uses for this.
i love that Pete’s bringing this to blogger blogs. opens this up to a much wider audience.
Once again, I have to say that there seems to be no real need for this.
What I was trying to say before was that it might be an exciting feature to those of you who understand how things work, but it is severely underutilized. look around at the blogs that have the trackback feature. they all have 1 (2 at the max) pings that say “this is so cool.” and after that a vast silence.
i’m just saying – it might be neat and it might seem like a terrific feat of programming to those who understand it, but – the real usefulness of it? i got the concept of it, i understand what the purpose of it is, i see that people are excited over it, but is it necessary or is it more like flavored water for dogs? interesting, but unnescessary.
unless it’s so new that people have not yet begun to apply it in the way it was intended. in that case, let’s hear more about the dmv.
“unless it’s so new that people have not yet begun to apply it in the way it was intended.” — aha, you have hit the nail on the head. the first step is everybody getting all excited about it. the next, well, as Mena said, there must be context. now — here’s the thing. not every post will inspire a whole other post. so many posts will go by, un-tracked-back. but then you get the one that merits spreading around. example: my post about donating to MT to help them get better servers, had i think three other posts after that, that pinged it.
perhaps your objection to this is that it seems like a meme tool. and, well, it is. but there are lots of good memes, lots of things that spread around blogland because they are good, interesting, funny, … noteworthy.
also, it requires widespread implementation of the feature, for it to really work. i’ve seen several posts i wanted to ping and continue the discussion.
and there are definitely other applications. for instance, a central location for a defined set of categories to ping. so posts about a certain subject on several blogs could be cross referenced.
it’s a very new technology, and many of the applications will happen after (a)people get used to it, and (b), there are enough blogs using it. from my observations, i’d say it’s going in the right direction. these things take time.
well, ok then. i’m not objecting, really. i’m just saying.
i sent you a link to where a non-theoretical use of pinging is being worked on — recipes! the applications for trackback are only limited by the number and type of different bloggers out there that use it.
which is why i’m so excited about it.
Like BtC, I am interested in more about the DMV … and humping.
tsk tsk… a lady never talks about the dmv.
I just love TrackBack, I think it makes the web even more webby! I think it should me compulsory
ahh, it’s wonderful, i changed over batgrl‘s site last night. off to convert more to the wonders of trackbackable MT.
