rumsfeld gets all zen with it

skarlet found this awesomely meditative quote:

“Now what is the message there? The message is that there are no “knowns.” There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that’s basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.”

sometimes i think that man is bonkers.

But he does know how to reach the heartland even if he is apparently a closet buddhist.

Actually, if you parse it, it sorta makes sense.

I think half the blogging world took the day off; that might explain why nobody else frothed. Go see Batty’s place…3 comments all day!

oh, sure, it makes sense, although it is more or less semantically null. it’s kind of like watching him do a graceful logical dance around the concept of actually saying something.

Skarlet, I was commisserating with kd about the previous Verisign-related post’s lack of “frothing”, not about Rumsfeld’s musing about the unknowable. (Where’s Ez when he’s needed?)

    exactly.

Run that by me again. Sounds like he’s talking in parables!

It’s an excerpt from his forthcoming off-off-Broadway performance piece “Don Rumsfeld Gets Existential on Your Ass.” The quote is actually from June, Link, and that’s why no one is interested now.

Ok… I’ll probably be the odd duck here, but I read it (ok, read it twice) and it makes good sense to me. It’s a whole different level of ignorance that he’s talking about. Most people just assume that you either know something, or you don’t. And, of course, that’s the case… but any time you’re making a plan it helps to know exactly what it is you don’t know, and to try to uncover as many of those ‘known unknowns’ as possible.

This paragraph would also be a good way to get a person who’s in an ‘altered state’ inextricably tangled in his/her own thoughts if read fast enough. It’d be a good ol’ fashioned mindfuck.

there is a British radio show which has a “Donald Rumsfeld soundbite of the week” section. if this doesn’t get included, i’ll be *very* surprised!!

oh, it makes sense, Pete — and if one were in the right frame of mind, it would be, like totally profound, dude. like, whoa.

    i don’t know what i don’t know, do you?

  14. kd

well, i know there are things i don’t know, and i know there are things i don’t know i don’t know.

you know, and then you don’t know, you know?

see, i’ve said things like this before, but i was really stoned at the time.
