leonid flux estimator

according to this calculator thingy, looks like my chronic insomnia might actually pay off tonight! since it will be the last great meteor shower in my lifetime.

this is well within my sleepless range:

12:14-12:44 am HST is the optimal time for us, but we have cloud cover, not to mention all the city lights of Honolulu in the east, which is the direction we’re told to look.

rats! it’s going to be clear here, i’m not even sure which direction to look, but i have my socks and my sandals and my weird duster-coat-bathrobe thing that i think was a fashion thing from the 80′s, with which to go out a-wandering, should i happen to be sleepless at the much later hour here.

wish i wasn’t a wuss, and was willing to climb up on the roof to watch. but no.

Well, if it’s midnight here, then it ought to be 2:15 and forward there. And I suspect it’s still in the eastern sky as well.

Do not get up on the roof; even if you don’t fall off, the neighboring nuns might worry. ;)

    Ummm… kd? No roof.

    Nope, nope, nope…

    Trust me on this one.

to see to the east, i might actually have to wander out to the main street, which is too brightly lit. clear east views are not possible from a non-roof location.

i am afraid of heights, but if i had a ladder, this would be worth overcoming it for. thankfully for myself and my hatred of broken-bone pain, i have no ladder.

’tis almost time. i’m still up. i’m so into this.

it’s the best excuse i’ve had in … a long time, to stay up way too late.

  8. kd

and, well, there were a few. i made a couple wishes. not what i’d hoped for, but still, at least i can say ‘i was there’

  9. Da Goddess

Hope you felt me wave to you! Silly, I know. Great staying up with ya! May all your wishes come true, KD!

4.20 am… Just got back. We’ve seen few dozens of them, and to top it… some dancing Northern lights as well. That was some experience :-) )

It’s probably a really really really good thing there were no beer-fueled expeditions up on the roof! There’s no internet access for patients in hospitals.

Man, I totally hate living in the city at times like this. We can barely see the stars. Sigh. Hope you took pics, kd!!

  13. batgrl

So? So? What was it like? Did you see it? I overslept, dammit.

  14. kd

i just saw a couple shooting stars, while standing in my front yard using my hand to block out the streetlight — also the moon was up there real high too.

    damn suburbs.

Movies and meteors I have not seen…

No, I still haven’t seen Harry Potter and it’s killing me, ok? I’m hoping to see it on Thursday. Maybe. KD linked to a great calculator that told me exactly when I needed to go outside to see the meteor shower – 4:22am. And of course I overslept. Which…

  16. kd

and even if i’d been able to see a bunch, my camera would have been utterly incapable of taking the pictures.

rats again. it might require more beer for me to make this late hour. running out would surely send me to sleep.

ahh, the things i do for science!
