you know what must really suck?

being a DJ for a Clear Channel affiliate, and playing ‘The Last DJ’ and trying to delude yourself that they can’t turn you into a company man, they can’t turn you into a whore

i heard this song on KTYD (which has been assimilated) on the way home and felt bad for the guy playing it. sad, really. full lyrics in more.

The Last DJ

Well, you can’t turn him into a company man,
you can’t turn him into a whore.
And the boys upstairs just don’t understand anymore.
Well, the top brass don’t like him talking so much,
and he won’t play what they say to play.
And he don’t wanna change what don’t need to change.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
And there goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.

Well, some folks said they’re gonna hang him so high
cos you just can’t do what he did.
There’s some things you just
can’t put in the minds of those kids.
As we celebrate mediocrity
all the boys upstairs wanna see
how much you’ll pay for what you used to get for free.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
There goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.

Well, he got a new station down in Mexico
and sometimes it would kinda come in.
And I’ll bust a move and remember how it was back then.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
There goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.

  1. KEXP – a Washington radio station that (actually still) has an online broadcast. No commercials. Public radio that actually plays music of all kinds. Kicks boo-tay.

  2. we actually have a decent classic-rock format (semi-)independent station around here, it’s part of a corporation that owns a goodly handful of local stations, but …. this corporation is the same one that took the last “alternative” music station in town and went top-40-country with it. so i have my resentments.

  3. clearchannel is the antichrist! oh and L.A. radio sucks – we have 3 whole rock stations, and most of the rest are spanish language. most of my listening these days is either cd’s or online broadcasting.

  4. Actually, technically, there’s no rock stations in L.A. There’s an alternative station and two bad classic rock stations, and a bad Hot AC station that plays a lot of alternative.

  5. i’m with lomara. i stopped listening to radio almost a year ago now.

and TP? i think i stopped listening to him when he became the reincarnation of ELO. which is too bad, really, because up to Long After Dark dude brang it.

  6. All we get here is Clearchannel. City of four million people. All. Our “alternative” station plays Ricky Martin and Eric Clapton. We burn CDs.

  7. Yes, I felt sorry for the LA people and their radio choices. I guess I had thought they would have very progressive listening choices.. Boy was I wrong.

  8. Clearchannel is unholy. I’m a solid 70/80’s dino-rock kind of girl, but even I get tired of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac played every other hour as they do on the “Classic” station here in town. There were huge classic rock wars a few months back, and the upstart now has my preset because they play Aldo Nova, Triumph and LOTS of Bad Company! Not to mention Rush (something *besides* Tom Sawyer, thank you!) and old Billy Squier.
